Let’s be honest: it can feel downright impossible to have a quiet day at work if you’re an introvert. The constant interactions, demands, and pressure can leave introverts feeling drained and overwhelmed even if they’re working from home. This can be a break room, a balcony or patio, or it can even be a conference room that you book for an hour (I used to do this all the time when I worked in advertising, and it was a life-saver!). If you’re working from home, seek a space that’s free from distractions. If possible, add calming elements like plants, soft lighting, and comfortable furniture to the space to create a peaceful oasis where you can recharge.
  2. Utilize Breaks For Quiet: Make the most of your breaks by finding a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of the office. Use this time for reflection, deep breathing, or engaging in activities that help you relax and rejuvenate like reading. This includes lunch! It’s okay to take lunch by yourself. Just because your colleagues are eating lunch together doesn’t mean you have to join them.
  3. Ask For Flexible Work Arrangements: Consider working remotely a few days a month or adjusting your schedule to incorporate periods of solitude… especially in between meetings. This way, you can create a work schedule that suits your introverted needs, allowing you to decompress and recharge.
  4. Invest In Noise-Canceling Headphones or Earplugs: Invest in a good pair of noise-canceling headphones or earplugs that reduce ambient noise. They can help drown out the background noise and create a sense of calm in even the busiest of workplaces.

Developing Healthy Boundaries to Protect Your Introverted Energy

Setting boundaries is crucial for introverts in a high-pressure workplace. It’s essential to communicate your needs effectively and establish limits to protect your personal space and recharge your energy. Here are some strategies to develop healthy boundaries:

  • Set an away message and/or add language to your email signature detailing how frequently you check messages and when someone can expect a reply. Need help?   • Schedule regular breaks and downtime throughout the day to recharge and restore your energy. This is especially important in between meetings. Use these small breaks to stretch your body, refill your water, and take deep breaths.
  • Set realistic goals and deadlines that allow for a balanced workload and adequate time for introspection and reflection. Communicate your plans to your manager so they know when to expect deliverables and don’t feel obligated to follow-up.
